Yesterday I had an absolutely epic day on John's Brook. Despite being sick, I had to give it a shot because of the 4 attempts I made last weekend, which were all unsuccessful. Eric, Bill, Chris, and myself met at the Mountaineer to find the river too low but it was raining. We started hiking and got down to the river to find it at the perfect level but rising fast.
It was a great high water run. 1 swim, 2 boat extractions, 1 z-drag, and a paddle lost forever was the price we paid on the way down. I got to use just about every ounce of rescue skills that I posess.
Right now I'm sitting here in my house thinking my 2006 kayak season is pretty much over. The wind is blowing about 50 miles per hour and it's snowing a little bit. The funny thing is, I said that last Sunday. So...you never know what might happen next weekend.

I'm sick and the boys threw down at Inner City Strife
So, while I was home with Pneumonia on Thursday Bagel and Hobbit met Steven and Jeremy in Watertown and threw down in the cold weather at Inner City Strife. Those guys put in a serious effort to do some seriosuly cold playboating. That's commendable. It looked like a good level, wish I could have been there.

As I am writing this it is dumping rain. Despite recovering my illness, today might be the day I get redemption from last weekend. Stay tuned...

A rainy Friday turns to winter in the Northeast
The weekend of October 20-22 was very interesting. Friday the rain was coming down heavy and fast. I had reaslly high hopes of a new Adirondack tripple crown (Klondike Brook, John's Brook, Boquet).
I ran out of school as early as I could and drove down te John's Brook with Bill frazier to meet Dan Hayes. We found the river to be at a perfect level at the take-out. We started walking up the trail as it continued to rain. When we finally got down to the river we found it to be at a scary high level. I put on first and caught an eddy 20 yrads later, and instantly ferried over to river left and took out. Dan and Bill did the same. The river was too high. We figured we'd come back on Saturday and have a great day. As we hiked back down to the car it began to snow pretty hard.
We got back to Lake placid and it was winter. There was snow all over the trees, and about 4 inches on the ground. It was as if we had driven down to Keene in the fall and come back in December. Really weird.
On Saturday we found John's Brook and the Boquet to be too low. We rolled over to Vermonto to find everything too high. So we drove all the way over to Montpelier to run Joe's Brook somethign that neither Freddie, Justin, willie, Dan, or myself had ever run before. It was definitely a fun run but not really worth the 6 hours of driving for the day.
Sunday I Dan and I had a mellow day running Hull's Falls and the Branch.
Monday I got a surprise day off of school and got a chance to run the Boquet, Hull's Falls, and the Branch with Eric Justin and Bill.
The key to this weekend was effort. I had rteally high hopes on Friday and I didn't let the dissapointment stop me from kayakign like I have many times before. Just because the convenitent classics aren't running does not mean yo have to stop boating. If your original plans don't work out you have to try something else. Maybe somethign new.

Moose Festival 2006
So, another Moose Fest. has come and gone. This year's was definitely my favorite so far. We had normal water, normal (snowy) weather, and the race was awesome.
The second year of the Old Forge Bar Crawl on Friday night was better than the first. Slickers and the Tow Bar offered up the best action.

On Saturday I got an early start on the river with Freddie, Justin, and Dan. Then ran the race, then did another lap in our short boats. 2 and a half times down the Moose River is a lot of kayaking in one day.
The race went off without a hitch, unless your justin Beckwith, There were 10 compeitiors launching off of Agers right about the same time. Justin caught a little snag when he nearly pinned his Wavehopper above the falls.
the top 5 overall were
1. Justin Beckwith
2. Freddie Coreille
3. Me (Matt Young)
4. Trip Kinney
5. Tom Vickery

The festival was good nothing real interesting happened. The most interesting thing was the inch or two of snow that fell overnight. Sunday was good day. Two laps down the river then a quick drive home. I can't wait til next year.

Epic Day on the Moose
This weekend was just about the perfect wetaher you could possibly have. We rolled down the Moose in a huge posse and it was fantastic. I think almost every kayaker in the adirondacks was there plus a few from some other areas. Chris Kill and I took out the long boats to see what it's going to be like for the race during Moose Fest weekend. Chris even fired up the Alpine line at Crystal in his T-Canyon. We took a lot of new people down. That made it very exciting. Everyone is looking to next weekend.
